York Panorama Commission
A permanent piece of public art commissioned by York Archives sited in York Library, Museum St, York, YO1 7DS.

The coloured textured panel measuring 3.5m x 1m is made from cast and coloured plaster; the surface is tactile and people are encouraged to touch it.

The design is laid out as an ancient stone wall, reflecting York’s city walls. The stone blocks contain images illustrating aspects of everyday life in York today, based on stories told by local residents, collected as part of ‘York: Gateway to History’ project which aims to increase public access to the archives, funded by the Heritage Lottery.

"The panel is terrific! It is superb in its technical execution, details and the joy in the making! We loved all the little lines of text, which are so unexpected and delicious. We spent ages drinking it all in."
